Pushing back against the mild panic, I went longer today. My New Mexico trip is a month away, and I know riding a loaded bike in the mountains demands more fitness than I can find right now. I made a fitness building plan but am way behind on that. At this point, the only real plan is to maximize saddle time and elevation gain with every opportunity.
This longer route in Saint Jo is one of the best ways available to me (within an hour drive) to spend five hours getting some elevation gain. I probably did about the same amount of elevation gain today as our first day in New Mexico. But I did it with a minimally loaded bike, and with much more oxygen rich air. Stay tuned for more panic posts as I try to prepare as best I can.
